Positive: This was our second stay at The White Hawk in El Castillo within the past 1.5 years, and once again, the property’s breathtaking views and wraparound porch stole the show. Nestled in the lush hills with a direct view of Arenal Volcano, it’s a romantic and serene escape that feels like a true immersion in nature. What We Loved - The Porch & Views: The wraparound porch is the crown jewel of this home. Whether sipping coffee or watching the mist roll over the volcano, it’s an unforgettable experience. Wildlife sightings added to the magic—during this green season visit, we spotted hummingbirds, green parrots, and even a few toucans. - Homey Kitchen: The kitchen is well-stocked with accessories, making it easy to prepare home-cooked meals and feel right at home. - Family-Friendly Touches: Netflix access was a thoughtful addition that kept our kids entertained during downtime. - Comfortable Climate Control: The room A/Cs worked well, keeping us cool and comfortable throughout our stay. - Rain-Ready Improvements: The previously leaky roof had been repaired, which was a relief given the nightly rains during the green season.

Negative: While the property remains charming, some maintenance issues suggest it's beginning to show its age: - Refrigerator Concerns: The ice maker was non-functional, and the water dispenser was painfully slow. More concerning was the fridge’s initial inability to cool food to safe temperatures, though it did stabilize overnight. - Bathroom Repairs Needed: The toilet off the kitchen refilled every five minutes—a problem we had noticed during our last stay and unfortunately found worsened. Despite reporting it to management, it remained unresolved. Other issues included a broken toilet paper holder and a sticky handle on the toilet which made the valve stick open in the master bathroom. - Kitchen Functionality: One stove burner was out of commission, though the remaining burners and the top oven worked fine. - Missing Waterfall Trail: A hikeable waterfall near the property was no longer accessible due to a landslide the previous year—this was explained at check-in, but it was a missed highlight from our last visit. Final Thoughts Despite the maintenance hiccups, The White Hawk remains a beautiful and romantic retreat with views that truly don’t do justice in photos. It’s a place where nature, comfort, and tranquility converge. With a bit more attention to upkeep, it could easily reclaim its spot as a flawless getaway. Would we return? Yes—but we’d hope to see some of these issues addressed to make the next stay as seamless as the scenery.
